Clare Miller

Clare Miller

Acoustic Guitar / Indoor Drum

Clare’s routes began in Thurso Pipe Band under Pipe Major Kevin Gunn, where aged 9 she began to learn not just the pipes but also the side drum & tenor drum – a teaching method that the Northern Bands frequently employ.

In 2003 Clare received her LCM Honours certificate in Scottish Music Studies which brought her to Aberdeen College where she met and was tutored by Julie Brinklow (Thistle Piping) where she then become the first piper to pass the London College of Music teaching qualifications and the first piper to pass the Teaching Diploma at Aberdeen College. During this time Clare also developed her keyboard skills & guitar skills.

In 2004, Julie encouraged Clare to come along and audition for the Grampian Police Pipe Band, and so Clare became a competing piper and enjoyed several seasons with the band. In 2009 Julie then, invited Clare, being a versatile musician and also experienced drummer as well as piper, to assist in tutoring the Portlethen & District Pipe Band Drum Corps, a role she held until 2011. During this time, the band won 2010 British Championships, 2nd at the Worlds as well as numerous drumming prizes.

Romance led Clare to Edinburgh where she is now the Pipe Major of the Davidson Mains School Pipe Band formed in 2012 where she taught and led them through to fruition to the competition field for the first time in 2015.

Clare has to be one of the most musical people I know! She has a unique understanding of all the instruments in a pipe band and so she has the ability to create a wonderful ensemble. Clare is actually our Acoustic Guitarist, yet another of her talents, she understands perfectly the chord progression in pipe music and can create an accompanying line that is second to none as she is first and foremost a Piper. Clare regularly travels up from Edinburgh to duet with me on Smallpipes & Guitar – this is always a particular highlight for me at a wedding.”
