Born in Germany after his parents served in the RAF, Fraser quickly became interested in piping after hearing his father, Michael, play in local bands in Scotland and abroad. Michael Maitland also played in town band “Stonehaven Pipe Band” under Pipe Major & Thistle Piping Proprietor, Julie Brinklow, in the late 90’s.
By age 3, Fraser had already taken up the practice chanter and by age 8 had started solo competitions. After moving back to Scotland, Fraser took professional guidance from tutor Duncan Watson, (Aberdeen) and continued success into the senior ranks.
Fraser is currently a registered member of the Competing Pipers Association, and regularly plays in competitions throughout Scotland with considerable success.
Being a well rounded piper, Fraser also has experience within the pipe band world having been Pipe Major of Robert Gordon’s College Pipe Band (2006), and is currently Pipe Sergeant of the Aberdeen Universities’ Officer’s Training Corps.
Fraser also has considerable teaching experience after gaining his Senior Certificate at the College of Piping (2006) and is now a part time tutor for the Army Cadet Force. He also teaches privately and at his old secondary school in Aberdeen.
I’m quite excited to have Fraser on board. Any Piper who knows their soloists, and who the top Pipers are, will recognise the name Fraser Maitland! He has achieved many more titles than he admits and his love of the Bagpipes is something that shines through in his enthusiasm. (J.Brinklow)
