Jade McDermid

At the tender age of 10, Jade started learning the side drum at the Bucksburn & District Pipe Band and after a very short time was placed in the Novice Juvenile Pipe Band where she almost immediately enjoyed success on the competition fields. The band were promoted to Juvenile grade, (equivalent of Grade 3 but under 18’s), and continued to take home the prizes.

At 15, Jade was advanced from the Juvenile band into the Grade 1 band under Leading Drummer David Brown Jnr. During the following few competition seasons, Jade gained much experience of competing at the highest level, gaining championship trophies and herself being promoted to Deputy Leading Drummer, alongside her mentor David Brown Jnr. Jade also actively competed in Solo drumming contests where she very modestly admits that she “picked up a few trophies”.

After 13 years with Bucksburn & District Pipe Band, new challenges were fresh in Jade’s mind as she looked to receive input in different styles of high level competition drumming and so in 2008, she secured a place with the Tayside Police Pipe Band under Leading Drummer Ian Tobin. Jade immensely enjoyed this time with Tayside Police Pipe Band, but alas the travelling commitment ultimately meant that Jade returned to her home city to look for new challenges.

From 2009 – 2012, Jade played with Grampian Police Pipe Band where fellow Thistle Piping team members, Julie Brinklow, Corry Sutherland, Drew Sinclair & Linsey Milne all resided at that time.  2009 – 2011 saw the Grampian Police Pipe Band consistently placed amongst the top bands in Grade 2 until finally at the end of 2011, the band were promoted to Grade 1. In 2011 Jade became Leading Drummer at Thistle Piping and also came on board as the drumming tutor at the Portlethen & District Pipe Band during 2011 & 2012 where she worked alongside Pipe Major Julie Brinklow.

In 2012 Jade made the move to Buchan Pipe Band and won the World Championships (g2) in 2013 followed by the World Drumming Championships (g2) in 2014 and remains there today although the band are now competing in Grade 1 among the finest in the world.

Jade is a very thorough person. She worked diligently with the drum corps at Portlethen and all the time managed to see the bigger picture whilst keeping a good level of humour. Jade is very musical and is always looking for new challenges such as tutoring or trying different drumming styles and techniques. She certainly is an asset to Thistle Piping. I am very pleased to have a World Champion drummer like Jade on board. (J.Brinklow)
